Silver lining

September 2012  •  11 September 2012  •  Frances Maguire, Columnist, FX-MM

Cloud technology is taking the financial services industry into a new era of lower cost computing and increased flexibility with ‘pay as you grow’ services becoming available. Frances Maguire looks at how this is shaping next generation corporate treasury solutions.

Despite the economic outlook, recent research commissioned by Microsoft predicts that 18% of European SMEs are planning to invest in new technology in the next twelve months because cloud technology is changing the way that millions of firms conduct their business, simply by enabling them to achieve more computing power for less money.

Cloud computing facilitates a wide range of business IT from using software provided by the internet to running management operations such as human resources or accountancy.

Daniel Verbruggen, Managing Director, Head of Relationship Management, Developed Markets EMEA at BNY Mellon Treasury Services, says that whilst cloud computing is still a relatively new concept in the industry, it could rapidly grow as rather than using shared services, on a formalised basis, users can tap into applications that are kept in the cloud.
